Over the past 12 months, photographer Bob Wielaard has been working on a project entitled ‘Tears of the Rhine’. For this purpose, the old courses of the Rhine river were followed. The journey starts where the river enters the Netherlands and ends at its mouth in Katwijk. krm03 ktw01 ktw03 pak01 pak02 pak03 rhn01 rhn04 str01 str04 str07 str09 str11 The photography was determined by remarkable points in the course of the ancient river and in the course of its history and significance for the country. Mainly black and white pictures are alternated with pictures created with home-made filters that portray the elusiveness of the land and water. The naming of rivers in the Netherlands is confusing and the original river has been given many names. Over the centuries, the river has been divided, dammed and intersected with canals. In the long struggle with the water, the river has now been tamed and controlled. |
